City of Fallen Angels

Title : City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments #4)
Writer : Cassandra Clare
Number of Page : 424
Publisher : McElderry Books

The Mortal War is over, and sixteen-year-old Clary Fray is back home in New York, excited about all the possibilities before her. She's training to become a Shadowhunter and to use her unique power. Her mother is getting married to the love of her life. Downworlders and Shadowhunters are at peace at last. And - most importantly of all - she can finally call Jace her boyfriend.

But nothing comes without a price.

Someone is murdering Shadowhunters who used to be in Valentine's Circle, provoking tensions between Downworlders and Shadowhunters that could lead to a second bloody war. Clary's best friend, Simon, can't help her. His mother just found out that he's a vampire and now he's homeless. Everywhere he turns, someone wants him on their side - along with the power of the curse that's wrecking his life. And they're willing to do anything to get what they want. At the same time he's dating two beautiful, dangerous girls - neither of whom knows about the other one.

When Jace begins to pull away from Clary without explaining why, she is forced to delve into the heart of a mystery whose solution reveals her worst nightmare: She herself has set in motion a terrible chain of events that could lead to her losing everything she loves. Even Jace.

In my opinion:
I think the fourth installment of The Mortal Instruments series was better than the third. Probably it was because there were more Simon's parts than Clary and Jace. I kinda pitied Simon because he would live forever young as vampire whereas all of his friends and family would die at the end. Well, not all. Magnus would accompany him at least.

There were a familiarity and sense of peace reading something that I knew so well. I like books in series because I could keep meeting and reading the same characters over and over again. It was like meeting long lost friends. Nostalgic. The Mortal Instruments might not have the best stories, but I love reading the part where every characters talked normally like other people in real lives. Simon's band, Alec and Magnus in holiday, sending post cards, having a stranger as housemate, going to the wedding... I loved bits and pieces of ordinary things that happened in the fantasy world. The interactions between the characters looked more solid now because I'd already known them very well.

Not much happened in this book. It was about Simon as The Daylighter and the Mark of Cain bearer (cool combination!). One day, an ancient vampire came to him and asked him to be her ally. Something was going on in the vampire world. Simon also met a new mysterious friend. At the same time, his vampiric nature started to emerge and he was sick all the time. When his mother found out about his new identity, she hated and rejected him. And there was also a girl problem. Ckckckck...

The actual suspense of this book came from the dream that Jace had, the dream that made him pull away from Clary. At the end he was finally controlled by demon and troubles happened. That final scene... I got goosebump. Why? Why? Why was Sebastian successfully resurrected? The ending was such an eerie thing, ewww...

I had funny moment when Magnus and Alec were forced to go home while they were having their "honeymoon". I was quite intrigued with Magnus. I always liked people with histories, especially the one who was immortal.

And of course... Jace was still the master of smart mouth. I found his lines were quite entertaining.

“You know, some people think Shadowhunters are just myths. Like mummies and genies." Kyle grinned at Jace. "Can you grant wishes?"

"That depends," he said. "Do you wish to be punched in the face?”
